Another sad reminder why the work of professional Architects, Engineers, Licensed Contractors and Inspectors matter. The work of Municipal Employees who enforce and safeguard this collective process matters. These are not arbitrary tasks created to obstruct the race toward personal wealth. These are not frivolous expenses to be avoided by homeowners, developers or taxpayers. Maximizing one's ROI, resale value or take-home income does not trump the safety and lives of the public - whether its many lives in a multi-family urban tower or one child in a neighborhood of single-family homes.
I fear there are a lot more of these tragedies in our future as the housing stock and municipal infrastructures built during the boom of 30-50 years ago continue to fail, and we continue to place a higher value on profit than we do on life.
