British Airways, the Pittsburgh International Airport’s Air-mall Manager, commissioned Dewey Nichols, while with Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann, to design Kidsport, a 1,500 s.f. interior, play land, located on its international concourse, C. Their desire for the oasis for toddlers and adolescents, was to provide a safe and lively environment in which traveling children could expend pent-up energy.

The design opened the activity area to the view of travelers passing through the isles of Concourse C. Bright primary colors were chosen to stimulate the imagination of all viewers. The creation of an amphitheater served as a performance area, a seating area for travel weary parents as well as to provide a large area for children to run freely and play with toys.

Views to docking planes were designed to excite the airline enthusiasts in the youthful crowd. The curvilinear wall forming the stage of the amphitheatre terminated at the viewing seating area. Colorful seating was added to promote leisurely docking observation. Even the children’s toilet rooms were used to enhance the playful design. Miniature toilets and sinks were juxtaposed to grand-scale ceramic wall tile patterns. All design effort was intended to stimulate the creative imagination of children of Kidsport.
